Armenian Forum embraces disciplines outside the traditional
boundaries of Armenian studies. It focuses on the contemporary world and fosters informed
discussion of the regional and global processes of which Armenian life is an integral
part.
Articles
Armenian Forum features peer-reviewed articles presenting
original documented research on contemporary issues. Articles of interest to the general
reader have priority. Topics may include
- science, politics, and atomic energy in Armenia
- Madonna and the whore: the portrayal of native and odar women in
Armenian literature
- how Karabagh achieved military success: external intervention vs.
internal strength
- cultural syncretism in Middle Eastern music
- the Assyrian community in nationalist Turkey today
- outcomes of privatizing agricultural land in the Armenian republic
- the Iranian revolution and the transformation of Armenian community life
in Iran
Exchanges
From time to time, significant contributions are published alongside
detailed responses by other specialists. This format is used to promote scholarship and
popular interest in various subjects. Topics include
- an essay on gender and identity with reference to the documentary Back
to Ararat, responses by top figures in cultural studies, and a reply by the original
authors
- a controversial interpretation of the Armenian Genocide, engaging
responses by leading figures in genocide studies, and a reply by the original author
Research notes
The journal sometimes publishes raw data preceded by an interpretive
introduction. Topics may include
- land reform, public health, education, energy, and ecology in the
Republic of Armenia
- results of sociological and demographic surveys
- key archival documents on episodes in Armenian life in Armenia and the
diaspora
- data on the contributions of Western oil companies to state and private
interests in Azerbaijan, including the military
Reviews
The journal reviews publications in modern Armenian studies, significant
books of regional interest, music, literature, films, and plays. Important new books or
sets of books are selected as a starting point for longer review essays on an area of
study. Topics may include
- an assessment of textbooks used to learn the Armenian language
- recent Azerbaijani publications on Transcaucasian history
Under the heading Classics Revisited, senior scholars are asked
to discuss a book that influenced their thinking years ago and upon rereading, proves to
be of lasting significance.
Commentary
Armenian Forum publishes researched, in-depth discussions of
contemporary issues. Topics may include
- an assessment of the historical development and current state of
institutions of Armenian studies
- proposals for reforming Armenias criminal justice system
- a photo-essay on Armenia in transition
Regular features include
- Media Watch: analysis of the coverage of various issues (violence
against women, politics in Armenia) in the Armenian and non-Armenian press
- The Neighborhood: interpretations of important regional and global
developments that affect Armenia and the Armenians
- Interviews with creative thinkers conducted by knowledgeable
colleagues
Letters
The journal welcomes thought-provoking letters, and when possible
publishes them along with authors responses.
