Lima and Ara Sarafian to Speak at Columbia University Vincent Lima and Ara Sarafian, editors of the acclaimed journal Armenian Forum, will speak at Columbia University on Monday, 4 December 2000, at 8 P.M. Their talk is titled, "Recognition, then What? The Armenian Question in the Twenty-first Century." It will take place in Sulzberger Parlor, 3d floor, Barnard Hall, Broadway at 117th, New York City. The public is invited. "Faced by a hostile and unrepentant Turkey, our sense of justice outraged, we want to act," Lima said, when asked what the talk will cover. "As a community we fought for a House resolution that would recognize the Genocide. Now we must ask ourselves some basic questions: What are we trying to achieve? Is a Congressional resolution a way of achieving it?" Lima noted that the 1965 slogan, "Our lands, our lands," has served as a rallying cry for many Armenians, "although it has left others unmoved. Is it our slogan in 2000? Should it be? As the world has changed, and Armenian communities have changed, have our interests remained the same? These are the questions Ara Sarafian and I will address at Columbia." As editors of Armenian Forum, Lima and Sarafian have been at the forefront of fresh and innovative approaches to contemporary Armenian affairs. Among the issues explored in depth in their journal: new ways to protect Armenian monuments in Turkey [click here and here]; the disposition of tens of thousands of life insurance policies from 1915 [click here]; gender and identity in the diaspora [click here and here]; economic and legal reforms in Armenia [click here and here]; the genocide against Kurds in Turkey [click here and here]; womens health in Armenia [click here and here]; and the security of Nagorno-Karabakh [click here, here, and here]. Sarafian and Lima have, at the same time, been on the forefront of Armenian Genocide documentation. Sarafian is general editor of Gomidas Institute Books and editor of the institutes Armenian Genocide Documentation Series. Lima is director of the Gomidas Institute. The talk is sponsored by the Columbia University Armenian Club. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call 1-609-883-9222. Click here for a report on a similar talk in London. |
