On September 18, 2007, a standing room only audience gathered at the famed Abril Bookstore to hear Ara Sarafian discuss the recent publishig of Raffi's works translated into English. Sarafian's appreciation of Raffi is reflected in his choice of publishing his works in English translations. Starting with The Fool and Jalaleddin, both translated by Donald Abcarian, Sarafian has now printed Tajkahayk, translated by Ara Stepan Melkonian. All three works deal with the beginning of the Armenian Question in the Ottoman Empire around 1877-80 and give valuable insights for our understanding of the Armenian world at the time. The best works of Raffi are often weak in the aspect of art, but they show the author's striking talent as a publicist. The insights he left us through his work can be critically evaluated and are invaluable for our understanding of Armenian history. Sarafian's main goals are to begin exploring Armenian social history on a pedagogical level and provide Armenian schools with this set of literature. He goes on to say, "at least this will get their interest and fire people's imagination about Armenian history, geography, and the period." This event accomplished its motive: begin the discussion and ignite curiosity into Armenia's social history and other writers of the time. Events like this are the impetus for a new generation to unravel Armenia's fascinating history. |
