The Armenians in the Province of Nicomedia by Minas Kasabian is the foremost ethnographic study of Armenian communities in Nicomedia (Izmid), in north-western Asia Minor, up to WWI. This work was originally printed in Armenian, in 1912, tracing the history and development of communities over 400 years of Ottoman rule. These settlements were founded by waves of emigrants from other parts of the Ottoman Empire, the south Caucasus and Iran, fleeing wars, famine and economic hardship. This study covers many aspects of these communities and presents details and statistics concerning demography, national administration, religious practices, economic development, health and education. The information presented here was painstakingly gathered by the author and included in this work for the scrutiny of all readers. The Armenians in the Province of Nicomedia by Minas Kasabian complements another major work concerning Armenians in this region, Bardizag and Its People by Krikor Mkhalian, also translated by Ara Stepan Melkonian.
